Technical availability

Technical availability describes the probability of finding an element or a system in a functional condition at a given time (VDI 3649, p. 2; FEM 9.222, p. 3). Availability considers both the failure and repair behavior of a system. The focus of existing guidelines from German-speaking countries lies in the area of availability tests and verifications for material flow systems that have already been implemented (FEM 9.221, FEM 9.222, VDI 3581, VDI 3649). See also Mean Time between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), cf. reliability.
