Scanners

are used for the optical scanning of barcodes. They are also known as laser scanners, as a laser beam is emitted for scanning, which travels or is guided over the barcode to be read. The reflections correspond to the light and dark elements (bars and intermediate areas) of the barcode and are decoded again in the S. S. are available as mobile or stationary devices.
Increasingly, S. based on CCD sensors (charge-coupled device) are being used. The CCD sensors are arranged as a line (line S.) or as a two-dimensional array (2-D S.). The pixels are captured in a similar way to a video camera and processed by an image analysis system (image analysis).
