Pallet height in logistics: Efficient standardization and recommendations
Pallet height plays a decisive role in the rational design of physical processes in a logistics process chain. In addition to standardizing the basic dimensions of a pallet, it is equally important to take the height of the pallet load into account. This ensures efficient use of transport and storage capacities and enables a smooth flow of goods.
CCG mbH, now GS1 (Global Standards 1), has published two recommendations for pallet load heights since 1985: CCG I with a height of 1,050 mm and CCG II with a variable height of 1,600 mm to 1,950 mm. These recommendations serve as guidelines for companies to optimize the loading of pallet loads and ensure compatibility with storage racks and means of transport.
In later years, two further recommendations were developed under the umbrella of ECR Europe, particularly for the transport sector: EuL 1 with a height of 1,200 mm and EuL 2 with a height of 2,400 mm. These recommendations make it possible to make optimum use of the space in transport vehicles such as trucks and containers and to reduce the number of transport trips required.
The standardization of pallet heights has numerous advantages. It enables efficient and fast handling of logistics processes, as the pallets can be easily processed in automated sorting and stacking systems. In addition, compliance with these recommendations helps to prevent transport damage and improve occupational safety.
When selecting the appropriate pallet height, companies must consider their individual requirements and the specific industry standards. For example, goods with high density and stability can be stacked in higher loads, while more fragile products may require a lower height to avoid damage.
In summary, standardizing pallet height is an essential part of efficient logistics. The CCG and EuL recommendations provide guidance to optimize processes in the process chain, increasing efficiency while reducing costs. Careful consideration of pallet height enables companies to improve their logistics processes and strengthen their competitiveness in a globalized economy.
