Double cycle
Double cycle in storage and retrieval machines: sequence and function
The double cycle, abbreviated as DSP and internationally known as “double cycle”, is an important operating mode of a storage and retrieval machine (SRM). This system enables the efficient handling of load units in automated warehouse environments. Below you will find out how the double cycle works and how it differs from the single cycle operating mode.
How the double cycle works:
In double play, the storage and retrieval machine picks up a load unit at the putaway location. This load unit is then transported precisely to the preselected shelf compartment to be stored there. But the process goes even further. After storage, the storage and retrieval machine moves to another shelf compartment, removes a storage unit from there and transports it to the retrieval location. This two-sided process, in which both storage and retrieval activities take place within one cycle, characterizes the double cycle.
Advantages of the double cycle:
The double play offers several advantages for warehousing and logistics systems. Firstly, it optimizes the material flow, as putaway and stock removal processes are linked. This increases the overall efficiency of the SRM system. Secondly, the double cycle reduces the empty runs of the storage and retrieval machine, as it performs both storage and retrieval during a cycle. This saves time and energy.
Difference to single cycle:
Compared to the single cycle, where the stacker crane only performs either a putaway or retrieval step per cycle, the double cycle combines both steps in one sequence. This increases the throughput rate of the system and contributes to more efficient warehouse management overall.
Conclusion:
The double cycle is an advanced operating mode for storage and retrieval machines that enables optimized handling of load units. By combining storage and retrieval processes in one cycle, the double cycle contributes to a more efficient and productive warehouse operation.
