Crossdocking

(abbr. CD) refers to the handling of goods without storage, as picking or stock removal orders already exist for this item and there is no stock in the warehouse. Delivered goods are immediately assigned to the corresponding goods issues (delivery tours or stores) or sorted to these. A typical variant of CD is the store-specific distribution of full loads in retail. CD requires the complete dissolution of the delivered goods and therefore generally requires an upstream sorting process. In general, CD requires upstream item-by-item picking at the supplier (two-stage CD) or customer-oriented pre-picking (single-stage CD).
The aim of CD is to reduce inventories, shorten delivery times and bundle transportation, thereby lowering costs.
