CAGE Code

The CAGE Code (Commercial and Government Entity Code) is a five-digit alphanumeric identification code that is assigned to companies and organizations worldwide. It is used to uniquely identify business partners and is used in particular in trade and for government contracts. In the USA, the CAGE code is issued and administered by the Department of Defense. Internationally, there are similar systems, such as the NATO Commercial and Government Entity (NCAGE) Code.

Use of the CAGE Code

The CAGE Code plays a central role in the supply chain and in contract management. Companies that maintain business relationships with US government agencies or the Department of Defense require this code for registration in the System for Award Management (SAM). The code is used to monitor contracts, process payments and ensure that only qualified and verified business partners are involved in government projects.

Advantages of the CAGE code

  • Unique identification: The code ensures that each company can be uniquely identified worldwide.
  • Security checks: It facilitates the verification and qualification of business partners.
  • Efficient administration: Authorities and companies can manage contracts and business relationships more efficiently.

Application and administration

To obtain a CAGE code, companies must submit an application to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). This process involves providing detailed information about the company, including its legal form, physical address and business activities. Upon successful review and approval, the code will be assigned. Companies must update their data regularly to ensure the validity of the code.

International use and NCAGE

The NCAGE code is used in international trade and is assigned within NATO. The process for applying for and managing the NCAGE code is similar to that of the CAGE code and also serves to uniquely identify and qualify companies in global trade.
