ABC classification
(ABC classification): A manual ABC classification is carried out for storage bins according to access frequency, i.e. ABC zones or areas are created. The warehouse management system records all accesses to items and can automatically carry out an ABC grouping of the items based on definable limit values. At the operator’s request, the stock items classified as A, B or C items (ABC items) can then be assigned to or removed from the designated storage areas or storage zones. This ensures that the storage bin allocation is adequate for the ABC distribution.
Note: From the point of view of route reduction during picking, ABC distribution only makes sense according to the access frequency criterion. The application of the turnover frequency criterion (turnover rate) does not necessarily lead to the same result, as a high turnover rate is not necessarily associated with a high access frequency.
The possible gain of ABC zoning must be set against the associated clearing effort, especially in the case of frequently changing ABC distributions.
